Velo Jones’ Diary: Ground Rules

For the better part of my life – save for a two-year, post-college stretch – I’ve been a skinny guy. Slim-fit jeans as a kid, easily pulling on the Euro-fit bike jerseys as an adult.

Yep, that’s me.

A good portion of that could be attributed to staying active, but also – I think – to youth. I’m 33. But I can see the writing on the wall. I know where this is heading.

And when you add aging to the growing responsibilities (feeding the family, not running a business into the ground, etc.) of an old guy, it’s easy to see how you go from “skinny guy” to “former skinny guy.” Where it used to take weeks and weeks of less riding and more food to gain a pound, it’s now more like one week.

So I’m setting some ground rules, mostly because I like the idea of rules. And I need to stay at least 10 pounds lighter than a co-worker whose rapid skinnyfication has turned him into an absolute beast. Also, I really like those skinny-fit Capo jerseys.

Anyway, the rules:

  • No soda (or beer) if you didn’t ride or run that day.
  • One soda or beer per day, not one of each, even if you did ride*. (*Exceptions can be made for rides four-plus hours in length.)
  • Stop eating when you get full, you big dummy. (I tend to eat like a horse at dinner time. I always have.)
  • Drink more water, since it helps you feel full and less likely to eat all day.
  • I don’t care who brought the donuts/bagels/cake/cupcakes/prime rib to work, you don’t need to thank them by eating most of it.
  • No eating after the kid goes to bed (around 8:30 p.m.).
  • Do something every day – ride/run/yoga, etc.

So, how am I doing?

Here’s the tally from yesterday: The first one wasn’t valid, since I rode to work. The second one was blown thanks to a lunch meeting and fairly tough ride home (25mph headwind the whole way, dipping temperatures and, at times, a light rain). I felt like I earned a beer for that one.

I did succeed on the third one, mostly because I only warmed up enough soup for one bowl. Score a win for me! But I didn’t drink much water and the bowl of cereal I had around 9 p.m. violated the “no food after bedtime” rule.

So, a 1-3 record, then? Ouch.

Today is already off to a shaky start. I haven’t done anything (in the ride/run/yoga vein) yet, and I’m two slices into a loaf of pumpkin bread dropped off by one of our customers. The soda in the fridge isn’t helping matters.

This could get ugly.

    Don’t set to many rules. It’s about baby steps. Those pounds didn’t come on over night so it’s going to take awhile.

    I think a big help is support from friends, family, and riding partners

    it takes months/years to build it up (been there)
    It will take months to come off too.

    Ride. Every Day.

    A 15min bike commute each way is alot more than I thought – especially if its city riding (aka sprints – with lots of reps and a real motivation to beat the light).

    Bring lunch.
    NO SODA.
    Even if you ride.

    If you really really have to have a soda – no “fake sugars”
    NO HFC!
    Drink real sugar soda (Mexican Coke) and int he small bottles.
